In 1944, an airport was created near Nikolaev, Ukraine to be used as a military airdrome for the armed forces of the Soviet Union.The need arose for a civil airport because of the improved overall situation in the country and the fact that the welfare of the Soviet people had increased. It was for this reason that, in 1960, Mykolaiv Airport was converted into a civil airport. When the traffic flow grew, and consequently the airport’s loading with it, a new landing strip was constructed in 1975.
The history of the Mykolaiv Airport was then marked in 1983 with the construction of a new comfortable terminal. The same year the airport was certified to the third ICAO category as an internal Soviet Union airport, which was able to provide any ground services for the aircraft type Tu-134 and for similar aircraft. The aviation industry was quickly developing in the Soviet Union, and the country’s airports could thus obtain permission for operating more powerful aircraft. In order to arrange ground handling of such aircraft types as the Tu-154, IL-76, An-22 and IL-62 the runway reconstruction was completed in 1989. It allowed the airport to extend their performance capabilities and operations.
